The Worst Titles of the Year 2025, According to Review Aggregator Metacritic

At every turn, fans are foaming at the mouth to post their rankings of the best releases of 2025. Yet, where are the disasters, the underperformers? We'll take a momentary detour to honor the absolute worst games of the year, according to review aggregator Metacritic. Are all of these games truly as terrible as the ratings suggest? Here is the list.

10. Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour

Metascore: 54/100, User Score: 3.4/10

Initial reactions to this tech demo were colored by its $9.99 price tag, with many expressing disappointment it wasn't a bundled game like similar console launches. Critical opinion spanned a wide spectrum, from scathing critiques to more generous takes that praised the polished software underneath the controversy. Despite the debate, the title proved to be a strong commercial performer during its launch month.

9. Rennsport

Metascore: 53/100, Audience Score: 3.2/10

Marketed as "not just a racing game," this driving sim from studios in Germany and Poland received pretty unanimous reviews. Reviews pointed out that the game felt unfinished in almost every category, especially in a year packed with high-quality racing titles. In the eyes of critics, this sputtering stinker was better off left unplayed.

8. Bubsy's Purrfect Collection

Aggregate Score: 53/100, User Score: 8.6/10

First things first: the awkward punctuation is a notable point of contention. This compilation of retro platforming games features a rude feline known for non-stop quips. Reviewers noted that these games were not good originally and feel dated with age. The surprisingly strong user score stands as a baffling contrast to the Metascore.

7. Hunter x Hunter Fighting Game

Aggregate Score: 53, Audience Score: 3.5

This anime-inspired fighter encountered widespread disappointment from both critics and fans. Issues included a small roster of characters and a severe lack of features. Player sentiment was notably negative, with some stating a wish that the title's failure would have consequences for the developers.

6. Riders Vs Dogoos

Aggregate Score: 51, Audience Score: 5.3

Based on the anime-style Hyperdimension Neptunia series, this motorcycle action game tasks players with gathering Dogoos. Critics argued that its attempt to mimic a *Katamari Damacy*-like gameplay loop didn't land, coming across as more of a cash grab than a substantial addition to the franchise. Its short length combined with a $40 price tag raised eyebrows.

5. Captain Blood

Aggregate Score: 50, User Score: 5.3

This title is a resurrected relic from the past, finally released after nearly two decades in development hell. The publishers consciously chose to preserve the game as an period-accurate product of its time, fully aware that today's audiences might dislike its old-school mechanics. As such, many reviews noted that the tale of its development was more interesting than the actual gameplay.

4. Salvation

Metascore: 44, User Score: 2.4

This anime-styled roguelike shooter inspired by games like *Returnal* fell flat with critics. The main issues included bland enemy design, samey environments, and a snoozy narrative. A particular feature involving the outfit degradation was widely panned and detracted from the game's overall experience.

3. Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator

Aggregate Score: 44, Audience Score: 4.9

Think of the strategic surgery games of the past, then remove the compelling story. That, according to reviews, is pretty much *Ambulance Life*. Reviewers found the ambulance-driving sequences to be a slog, and the narrative's handling of its subject matter was criticized as being insensitive. The overall experience was deemed not very compelling.

2. Tamagotchi Plaza

Aggregate Score: 43, Audience Score: 5.8

This shift away from the classic digital companion formula transforms the franchise into a minigame collection title. The result, based on critics, was a unsatisfying assortment of simple minigames that very soon overstayed its welcome. Some reviews went so far as to call it one of the worst titles available on its platform, noting a complete absence of depth.

1. MindsEye

Aggregate Score: 37, User Score: 2.5

Intended to be a major GTA-style title from a studio led by industry veterans, *MindsEye* was a notable disappointment. Reviews heavily criticized its poor shooting mechanics, uninspired storytelling, and a multitude of game-breaking glitches. Many found it to be a significant step back compared to previous-generation games in the action genre. Amidst the sea of negativity, a tiny number of fans found value in the experience, offering a distinct counterpoint.
