Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
