Pacific Bluefin Fish Commands Unprecedented Bid of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital Auction
A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which runs outlets domestically and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a notable bidder at the yearly new year's auction.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is famous for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past
After the auction, the winner informed reporters that he was "astonished at the amount," stating, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed in no time."
This most recent acquisition tops his own historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record another time.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be served at its restaurants throughout the country.
The frenetic activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
From Auction to Plate
The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter processed for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments soon after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so lucky as the year starts," remarked one elated diner.
