French officials have consented to start intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.

French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.

French police have rarely acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and civilians.

"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Now, a French maritime police spokesperson says officers will start taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.

Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to snarl the engines of the boats.

The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.

This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.

Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.

Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking ways to adjust to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.

The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
