Catherine's Yearly Festive Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Unsung Heroes
The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.
The large audience will hear a selection of carols, music and readings from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
Centred Around Kindness and Compassion
The theme of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
Attending the event are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.
A Gradual Return
The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Music and Opportunity
Guests arriving at the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at tonight's service.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Family Affair
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will include nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for food banks.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.
The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
