‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s journey from gurney to scoring with Athletic

Whenhe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in the UK, an teenage playing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in September 2015, he hit the target. The second time he took the field in the country, against the English side two months later, he converted. His third outing, against the Citizens not long later, indeed, he did it once more. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, as well. “Actually,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what was necessary: he was replaced.

“I was furious,” the attacker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Man United, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear the validity, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the training ground, the city, the morning session is about to start; post-session, the brief trip to Loiu and another trip to Britain, this time to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Just saying those two words lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for Athletic, partly because of the requirements of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.

In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a domestic final by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in four decades. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are unique and returning after absence in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

The player believed it difficult enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. Born to the one-time rival player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he went through a ACL injury, the cut, a drop in category and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the first team but every phase you progress through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his first game and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but In retrospect as something positive because it forced me to alter the perspective. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it helps. You develop habits new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then return home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, all resources are available, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. Every small aspect: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”

You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the previous season which, sometimes, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
