2026 Hailed as the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. However, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears uniquely strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

If these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
